What Does The Bible Say About Boyfriend and Girlfriend

There is no place in the scriptures that has condemned the mutual relationship between a man and a woman. In 1Corinthians chapter 11, verse number 11, the Bible says, “Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.” This is to say that the Lord has designed both genders for each other; a man can not be complete without a woman, and neither can a woman be complete without a man.

Even from the beginning of the world’s creation, in the garden of Eden. After creating Adam, God said, “…It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.” This can be found in Genesis chapter 2, verse number 18. And afterward, he created Eve for Adam so that his plan for creation could be well organized and completed, which is for man to multiply and replenish the earth. (Procreation)

The scripture only admonishes us to date righteously and respect each other’s sacred bodies. Marriage is approved by God and can be found in many instances in the Bible. He wants a man and a woman to be united legally and become one flesh, thereby living together as husband and wife. This can be found in the book of Ephesians, chapter 5, verse 31. And I quote, “For this shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.” He also gave them the divine power of procreation to give birth to their children.

However, unmarried young adults have abused this procreation power; some use it to derive pleasure, while others have given birth to children out of wedlock. The risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections and diseases is another problem faced by those who engage in premarital sex. Some women have committed a series of abortions because they’re not ready to raise fatherless children or whatever their reasons may be, which could lead to the blocking of their wombs or death in most cases. Honestly, the challenges and regrets from abusing this power of procreation (Premarital sex) are way more dangerous than whatever pleasure it derives from it.

This is why our Heavenly Father has given us these commandments and teachings in the Bible to guide us into having a less challenging life journey and enjoy the peace, joy, love, and blessings that come with obeying his words.

The scriptures often refer to our body as the “Temple of God.” This means we carry God’s presence and image in us; he can dwell in our body when we make it clean and conducive for his glory. The Bible said that no unclean thing could come near his dwelling, meaning that we must keep our bodies clean and pure for God to dwell in them. And this has to do with staying away from sins, especially sexual sins.

The phrase “Thou shall not commit adultery.” It can be found among the Ten Commandments that God gave the children of Israel in the book of Exodus, chapter 20, verse number 14.

Adultery is for married people who keep boyfriends and girlfriends outside their marriage. It is a severe sin in the presence of God, and the defaulters are faced with curses and penalties from God.

The second sin can be likened to it, which is “Fornication.”

In the book of Ephesians, chapter 5, verse number 3, the scriptures explain that when we want to become saints and children of God, we need to remove fornication and another form of uncleanliness. Also, In 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, verse number 3, and I quote, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:” In this verse, the Bible has stated it clearly that it is the will of God for us to abstain from fornication.

With all these instances from the scriptures, can we now say that the “boyfriend and girlfriend relationship is wrong ?” “What does the Bible say about boyfriend and girlfriend?” Worry no more because this article has been designed to comprehensively break down the answers to these questions. To answer both questions mentioned above, I’ll derive a subtopic, “How does the Bible want us to date?” With this subtopic, we will fully understand the best pattern of dating.

How does the Bible want us to date?

  1. Dating is not a sin; it is how you date that matters. It is a process in which you can mingle to know people better.

From the teachings of the scriptures, dating righteously is what the Lord expects from his children. However, we need to be fully mature in an age before considering going into dating; in some cultures dating from 16 years old is acceptable, while some cultures will prefer to date from 18 years old. When dating someone, you need to understand that you’re not yet married and shouldn’t practice anything sexual with them. You’re to respect each other’s bodies and allow yourselves to develop good friendships. Make sure your parents or guardian is aware of those you date.

  1. Avoid going on frequent dates with one particular person. Being too close to a specific person can give rise to uncontrollable emotions, which could make you engage in immoral acts. So it’s best you double date till you find the one you wish to progress into marriage with.

  1. Lastly, when you are entirely sure that you have found someone you wish to marry, you should court them for at least 3-4 months to study them better. During courtship, remember that you’re not yet married; even an engagement proposal is not still marriage. So you both have to wait till you’re married before having a sexual relationship.

In summary: Work with your parents, church leaders, and most importantly, with God, in other to have a successful Bible-based boyfriend and girlfriend relationship. Thanks for reading!
